Biography

Hema Malini R. Chakravarty was born on 16 October 1948 in Trichy, Tamil Nadu. She is expert in Bharatanatyam dance. She was a second actress from South India after Vyijayantimala. She was commonly known as Dream Girl. She completed her education from Andhra Mahila Sabha in Chennain. In 1961, she performed into Telugu film, Pandava Vanavasam in which she played short role of dancer.

She did her first film in Bollywood was "Supanon Ka Saudagar" released in 1964. In this film she played role of young girl performed opposite with famous actor Raj Kapoor. From the film "Johnny Mera Naam" released in 1970, she is become very famous and performed with Dev Anand. She performed "Tere Mere Sapane" in 1971 also with Dev Anand. Her double role in the film "Seeta Aur Geeta" was much hit and she became star actress in Bollywood. She performed double role with Sanjeev Kumar and Dharmendra and film was released in 1972.

She performed many films during 1970-80. She played many films with Dharmendra. Some of them were Sholay, Aas Paas, Charas, Jugnu, The Burning Train and the film Seeta Aur Geeta. She also performed comic roles in the films Joshila, Trishul, Meera, Lal Patthar and Satte Pe Satta. Hema Malini then moved towards direction. Her first film as a director was "Dil Aashana Hai" in 1992 and actors in this film were Shahrukh Khan and Divya Bharati. She also directed the television serial named as "Noopur" and also acted in serial as a dancer of Bharatanatyam and another serial Women of India.

After 1990s she took break in acting. She made her comeback with the film "Baghban" released in the year 2003. In this film she performed opposite with Amitabh Bachchan. In the film "Veer- Zaara" also she played with Amitabh Bachchan. In both of these films she played role of old married women who is beautiful and self respected.

Bollywood actors Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra proposed to Hema Malini but she got married with Dharmendra. Dharamendra was already married and has two children Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. Then Dharmendra and HemaMalini have two daughters Esha and Ahana. Hema and Dharmendra involved into BJP. She then selected to Rajya Sabha and in February 2004, legally joined BJP.

She produced Swami in the year 1977, Sharara in 1984, Aawargi in 1987 and Marg in the year 1992 but they were not released. She has seen in film "Hey Ram". She won Padma Bhushan Award in the year 1999 for contribution to cinema.
